Recommendations for Oaxaca, Mexico!

I spent a month in Oaxaca, MX in April - May, 2023 and I absolutely fell in love with the city! It’s beautiful, with so much going on, delicious food, and extremely nice people. Below is a quick list of recommendations that will hopefully help you start planning your trip to this colonial town.

Restaurants

Where I’ve been

  • Tierra del Sol (nice terrace, good for brunch) 

  • Sabina Sabe (good food, ambiance, and  bar)

  • Levadura de Olla (really good food but need reservations)

  • Don Juanito (amazing pozole, had it 3x) 

  • Boulnec (non-oaxacan food but amazing pizza and salad)

  • Hierba Dulce (vegan)

  • Herbivora (vegan tacos)

  • Las Quince Letras

  • Criollo (prix fixe menu)

  • Tacos Roy (known for al pastor tacos)

  • El Mirador (amazing view of the city at night, food is okay)

Where I’ve been

  • Free Walking Tour (2 hrs -- not the best but good to orient yourself to the city)

  • Santo Domingo Church + museum

  • Stamps museum (free and worth it)

  • Jardin Botanico (tour at 11am Mon-Sat)

  • Mercado Benito Juarez

  • Mercado 20 de Noviembre

  • Zocalo (plaza with live performances, good for people watching)

  • La Cosecha Organic Market (yummy food)

  • Barrio de Jalatlaco (cute neighborhood right outside of the center)

  • Bazar Alcala 100 (artsy fair)

  • Monte Alban (archaeological site outside of town -- can take taxi, bus or shuttle)

  • Hierve de Agua (natural spring outside of town)

  • Museo de los pintores Oaxaquenos (free - not super worth it)

  • Mezcal tour (7hr mezcal tour with tasting & food -- https://abnb.me/txT0L3OI2zb)

  • Case de Barro (shops and restuarants)

Where I didn't go but was considering it

  • Contemporary museum

  • Cooking class

  • Temazcal Oaxaca (sauna, spa, massage experience)

Misc

  • Kiyo cafe (cute coffee shop)

  • Ooooa.studio (cute coffee shop + lunch)

  • Archivo Maguey (dancing bar/club)

  • Selva (cute bar with specialty cocktails, get seat at window for views of the street) 

  • txalaparte (club)

  • Zapotec (live music every night; salsa & bachata lessons Wed nights starting at 830pm)

  • Casa Blason (cute cafe with good outdoor seating)

  • Barra Popular (cute corner bar with good vibes)
